It was the best of American Idol.
It was the worst of American Idol.
Two Asian Americans who gained their fame, and one case, their notoriety, from the just departed American Idol appeared on the show’s series finale Thursday night.
Jessica Sanchez reminded us why she came in second place on season on season 11 in 2012. Her rendition of Prayer showed us her vocal range and why fans enjoy her ballads so much.
She’s resisted being typecast into a box and has tried to sing more uptempo songs since signing her recording contracts, but that has not served her well.
For her career, I’d love to see her re-establish herself as a ballad singer. That doesn’t mean she has to sing ballads exclusively, just that her featured songs and singles should be in that mode.
Also reappearing Thursday was Hung, a pain in the side of many Asian Americans who felt his buffoonery did more to harm the image of Asian Americans, particularly men. His performance of She Bangs last night did nothing to change those concerns. With the end of American Idol, hopefully we’ve hear the last of him.
Did you watch American Idol last night? What were your thoughts?
