A hashtag campaign started by an Asian American to draw attention to the lack of opportunity for Asian American actors is gaining international attention.
Two British media outlets, the Telegraph and the BBC , published articles today about the campaign started by William Yu which replaces the photos of White male actors featured in movie posters with John Cho.
Those who support the campaign intended to get Hollywood executives and movie fans to imagine Asian American actors in lead roles are urged to retweet one of many movie posters from from the campaign’s website.
“I’m tired of hearing from people that they can’t ‘see’ an Asian American actor playing the romantic lead or the hero, so I created #StarringJohnCho to literally show you,” Yu said.
Yu says only 1% of lead roles go to Asian Americans.
Cho is not officially part of Yu’s campaign, but he’s got to be loving it.
