State of Politics is reporting a mailer coded with racist messages has surfaced in the campaign against Democrat Yuh-Line Niou in New York.
Niou is running to replace Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver who was forced out of office after being convicted of corruption charges.
The headline on the mailer reads “Yuh-Line Niou is not a good fit for our neighborhoods.”
“Yuh-Line Niou is not a good right for our neighborhoods.” “Backed by Chinatown Crooks”
“This effort to drum up fear of the district’s Asian populations and slander Yuh-Line Niou’s integrity and strong reputation is blatantly racist, dog whistle politics at its worst,” said Niou campaign spokesman Jon Greenfield.
Niou recently received the endorsement of the New York Times over six candidates. The election is Tuesday.
(An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the location of the assembly district)
