A new upscale eatery in San Francisco Chinatown is set to open before Chinese New Year, reports the SF Eater.
China Live will be subdivided into several Chinese restaurants including Market Restaurant and Bar which will feature seasonal Chinese dishes, Oolong Cafe will focus on teas from Asia, Eight Tables will have an eight course tasting menu and the Marketplace will sell retail items.
It’s part of a new movement to bring elegant cuisine to attract the foodies and younger crowd to Chinatown. It follows the recent opening of Mr. Jiu’s which was recently awarded a Michelin Star.
NPR reports this is a trend happening in Chinatowns across the country to elevate Chinese food beyond the fortune cookie and take out.
“I want to educate people that this is what a Chinese restaurant can be,” said Amelie Ning Kang who opened the MáLà Project in New York at the end of 2015. “Service, ambiance and design” are what she hopes customers will associate with Ma’La’ .
