A Chinese American Girl Story to be told on Amazon

American Girl is taking its drive for more diversity to television.

An American Girl special will air on Amazon featuring a 10-year-old Chinese American girl and her mother.

The story is titled An American Girl Story: Ivy & Julie 1976, A Happy Balance

According to Deadline, the role of Marilyn Ling, a strict but loving mother to Ivy, will be played by Gwendolyn Yeo.

Yeo’s past credits include American Crime and Grey’s Anatomy.

Hopefully Yeo’s character will go beyond the stereotype of a Tiger Mom and have some depth.

American Girl recently announced it would add a Korean American and Hawaiian doll. In the past, its been criticized for its lack of diversity.

The Amazon special is written by May Chanand will center around the family’s Chinese traditions and Ivy’s wish to be like her best friend, Julie Albright.
