Tonight’s episode of Dr. Ken is being billed as a season finale, but has the feel of a series finale.
It’s a question that’s facing numerous television shows this time of year–will the show return for another season?
The odds are not in Dr. Ken’s favor, although it seems to be hitting its stride and really does deserve another year.
Unfortunately viewers have not responded the way ABC might want.
Ratings are down 20 percent in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 16 percent overall.
In addition, the series is ending its first run of episodes before the most important rating period of the year- what’s known in television as May sweeps.
That’s not exactly a confidence booster for the cast and crew.
Art once again imitates life in tonight’s episode.
Ken gets a chance to audition for a role set at a community college. Fans of Ken Jeong know that his biggest role on TV prior to Dr. Ken was that as Senor Chang in Community, a series that ran for six seasons on NBC.
Dan Harmon, the producer of Community, plays himself in tonight’s episode.
So does Alison Brie who also had a role in Community.
Seth Rogen also makes a cameo appearance.
Dr. Ken is only one of two network series currently airing on broadcast television evolving around an Asian American family. While Jeong has been criticized as some members of the Asian American community for what some consider demeaning roles, Dr. Ken is not one of those roles. If this is the last original episode of Dr. Ken, and there is no season 3, it will and should be missed.

RE: Season finale airs tonight for Dr. Ken. Is it the series finale?: Agreed. MANAA is collecting data right now to try to make a case that ABC save the show.
