Vir Das is charming and witty, and at times salty.
His comedy special Var Das: Abroad Understanding is currently playing on Netflix.
He’ll jump from topic to topic, politics to heartbreak, religion to his overall idea of racism. Sure, at times, his humor is self-deprecating and offensive, but he knows there’s a line to be drawn. And some of his quotes, though extremely humorous, can also bring tears to your eyes for other reasons than just humor alone.
Such quotes include, and I paraphrase here:
“If we recognize our differences instead of pretending to ignore them but discussing them behind closed doors, racism wouldn’t be an issue.”
“If you’ve ever had your heart broken, you’ll know what true pain is. It’s a text box that says writing… writing… writing… while your heart threatens to beat out of your chest.”
And lastly, one of my favorite quotes, “Donald Trump, my friends, is your arranged marriage. Your parents picked him, and now you have to live with him.”
From Filmy Folks, Vir Das has lived in Lagos, to a small college in the Midwest, and back to India again. He has worked in Bollywood for acting, then gone and done comedy gigs in both New Dehli or New York. Let me end this article here with another beautiful line from him…
“I wouldn’t call myself successful, just obsessively exhausted. The music makes me smile, the movies make me feel humbled, and the comedy saves my life every day.” -Vir Das
