You can always tell how high a network is on a new series by the number of promos or ads you see leading up to the premier. By that barometer, ABC has high hopes for Daniel Dae Kim’s The Good Doctor.
Kim who serves as executive producer alongside David Shore (House) is confident the American adaptation of the popular Korean series will appeal to American viewers.
“There are many parts [of the show] that will resonate with American audiences. Medical dramas have built a frame to be a long-running success in the U.S,” he told Soompi.
Kim pointed to the “character’s ability to overcome hardship and challenges with effort.”
The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome. Murphy must overcome not only his condition, but the skepticism of his co-workers.
As previously reported in YOMYOMF, Tamilyn Tomita recently joined the cast as a series regular as Allegra Aoki, who oversees the hospital’s foundation.
“I loved the message of it, and it was a very familiar genre to American audiences in that it’s a medical show,” Kim said to the Chicago Tribune
“And I thought it would be really a good opportunity to make it in America. And so that was the impetus for me to try and bring it over.”
The Good Doctors airs Monday nights at 10/9 Central on ABC.
