The producers of The Simpsons have ended their silence about their long stereotypical portrayal of Indian Americans as seen through the character Apu.
The issue gained prominence after comedian Hari Kondabolu produced his documentary The Problem with Apu last year.
Voice actor Hank Azaria refused to participate in Kondabolu’s film despite the comedians long persistence.
In Sunday’s episode of The Simpsons, the concern expressed by Kondabolu and others were dismissed, perhaps predictably, as politically correct.
In the episode, according to CNN, daughter Lisa says “something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?” Lisa says while she stares at a framed photograph with the inscription “Don’t have a cow.”
YOMYOMY reports that Kondabolu responded immediately via Twitter.
“This is sad,” the comedian said.
According to Vulture, one fan on Twitter called the Simpson episode “toothless.”
