A husband and father of two is dead after a robbery attempt outside his Durham, North Carolina home, the fifth time the family says they have been targeted, reports the Herald Sun.
Hong Zheng died after his wife, Shirley Chan, exchanged gun fire with the suspects.
The couple had returned home from their restaurant. As they always did, the children were waiting for their parents. The son handed his mother a gun because they have been victims of robbery so many times before.
“This is like a daily routine,” Jade Zheng, Hong’s daughter, said to WRAL. “Where I look out from out from the window from my brother’s room. And my brother is downstairs with the magazine and the gun separated, and handing it to my mom when she gets out the car first because robbery, break-ins, it’s happened more than once.”
This time two cars with 9 people were parked outside their home.
“They shot at my mom at least three times,” Jade said to the Herald Sun. “My mom tried to assemble the gun.”
Mom went into mom mold, according to Jade, doing her best to protect her son.
When the smoke cleared, Chan found her husband in the car dead-shot in the face and neck.
“My family is broken,” Chan said.
