A special preview of the upcoming movie, Crazy Rich Asians, was held in L.A. In the audience were a whole bunch of AAPI influencers.
The initial response: overwhelming, tears, joy, pride, emotional.
My two favorite tweets: From director John M. Chu, “It’s not a movie, it’s a movement.”
And @jonmchu takes the stage and says he just had a daughter and he wants her to be able to see her stories on a big screen like this one. ???

And we get this from from Andre J. Daughtry. He said what, I’ve been thinking : Crazy Rich Asians is to AAPI as Black Panther is for African Americans. That’s putting a lot of pressure on the film adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel.
Seeing people of Asian descent cross my timeline who are excited about #CrazyRichAsians in much the same way I and many Black folk were geeked out over Black Panther is absolutely beautiful.
Visibility, representation and inclusion matter.

Take a look at the sampling of the responses below for yourself.
So pumped after tonight’s VIP Advanced Screening of #CrazyRichAsians — it was a packed house with so much love for director @jonmchu & the entire Asian cast, we all need to support this film! Thank you @wbpictures for bringing it to the big screen & @minjeezy for the invite! pic.twitter.com/torY0ls2Xk

Getting emotional just listening to these guys talk. As a film journalist, I have never been to an event with a cast like this before. ✨? #CrazyRichAsians pic.twitter.com/BOxFYbr369

This looks fantastic! I’m so proud of you, Jon…and your incredible cast. I can’t remember when was the last time I saw a cast like this in a mainstream hollywood film, let alone one with an Asian male lead. About time. Thank you. Ps: Michelle Yeoh as the matriarch is perfection https://t.co/yorf7BLfW9

If you support this movie, “I guarantee it will green-light 4 others with Asian leads.” – @jonmchu at the first screening of @CrazyRichMovie tonight in DTLA.
Packed house. Majority Asian audience. The energy is palpable. #CrazyRichAsians pic.twitter.com/ZEy5HrxJnP

Still on a high from #CrazyRichAsians Walked away from that movie like, “I want to be like everyone on that screen when I grow up.”
Then thinking about all the young API kids who’ll see it, feel that too, then grow up and actually do it. That’s why #RepresentationMatters ✊?

Lots of weeping in the theater and smeared eyeliner afterward, both as a result of @adeleBlim‘s thoughtful treatment of family and love themes, and also for the stunning realization that a generation of Westernized Asians has gone 25 years never seeing something like this.

Lying in bed after #CRAZYRICHASIANS screening. Trying to process what it felt like to see all Asians in a big studio film that was so extremely well-crafted in a theater full of Asians. I’m choked up AF. It’s a gamechanger let’s show it so much love in Aug. Asians, I ❤ us.
