The San Francisco Board of Education has unanimously voted to rename The Chinese Education Center in honor of late San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and his wife, Anita, reports SF Weekly.
“Both our parents are dedicated to improving the lives of immigrant children and care deeply about access to quality education that meets their unique needs,” said Tania and Brianna Lee, the daughters of Ed and Anita Lee, in a statement. “The renaming will be such a great honor to our late father and to the amazing work that our mother continues to do.”
Lee died of a heart attack in December. He was the first Asian American ever elected to the mayor’s office in San Francisco.
“Mayor Ed Lee was my friend and colleague for many years, and now his name along with Anita’s will continue to serve as a symbol for our newest residents that they are welcome here,” said school board President Hydra Mendoza to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The Board also voted to name Fairmont Elementary in honor of United Farm Worker co-founder Delores Huerta.
The former Chinese Education Center immerses its Chinatown students in English for one year and then transfers them to another public school.
