An Asian American producer hopes to bring a new spin to a racist television program.
Albert Kim has received a commitment for a pilot from Fox to revive the Kung Fu tv series from the 70’s, reports Deadline.
That series bypassed a chance to hire Bruce Lee, and instead hired David Carridine to portray a shaolin priest and martial arts expert who spoke in fortune cookie tongue.
Kim’s version will evolve around a kung fu studio set up to help down and out Chinese Americans, according to Film School Rejects.
In another twist, the lead character will be a Chinese American woman, presumably played by an Asian American actress.
Kim recently served as a show runner for Fox/20th Century Sleepy Hollow and co-executive producer on the CW’s Nikita.
