Asian Americans are leading the shift from traditional television to streaming services, Multichannel News reports. A Horowitz report found that Asian Americans are using streaming services more often than watching live television.
According to Radio + Television Business Report, the finding was a part of a Horowitz Report called FOCUS Asian: The Media Landscape 2018. The report found that Asian TV viewers spend 44 percent of their time watching streamed content and 38 percent of their time watching live TV.
Asian TV viewers also spend more time watching streamed content than other demographic groups. The report found that 14 percent of Asian TV viewers spend more than 75 percent of their viewing time on streamed content, while only 7 percent of consumers spent the same amount of time overall.
According to Multichannel News, YouTube and Netflix were among the top streaming choices for Asian viewers. Asian Americans are drawn to Youtube and Netflix because they are looking for content that reflects their experiences. YouTube and Netflix stream a wide variety of bilingual and Asian-language dominant content.
YouTube specifically provides Asian Americans with a platform to express themselves. Famous YouTuber Anna Akana says that Asian Americans were drawn to YouTube because they lacked representation in mainstream media.
“When YouTube first started its main stars were predominantly Asian … and people were asking, ‘why are all the stars on YouTube Asian
