UPDATE 2: Patrick Chung stood on the stage with a sling on one arm while hoisting the Super Bowl trophy with the other following the Patriots 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.
At the start of the second half, he walked off the field to the locker room with a broken arm, but would later return to cheer on his teammates.
“I gotta support my teammates,” Chung told NESN’s Doug Kyed. “Can’t do that from the locker room,” he said according to Boston.com.
“Everybody loves Pat. Pat’s such a good football player,” said his coach Bill Belichick after the game. “I can’t say enough about Pat Chung. That guy’s one of the best football players I’ve coached.”
The broken arm followed last year’s Super Bowl when he left the game with a concussion and never returned to the field. The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Patriots 41-33 in that game.
UPDATE: Patrick Chung is officially out with an injury in Super Bowl LIII. The starting safety of the New England Patriots left with an air cast on his arm after making a tackle in the beginning of the second half. When he left the game, the Patriots were up 3-0 against the Los Angeles Rams in a defensive battle.
His injury could open up some passing lanes for Rams’ quarterback Jared Goff who has had a lackluster game so far.
Chung entered his fifth Super Bowl with much bravado.
Chung didn’t mince words at a pre-Super Bowl rally. He said out loud what every player thinks, but few dare to say.
“We’re going to go there and kick their ass, baby,” Chung declared about the Los Angeles Rams before 30,000 screaming Patriots fans Monday.
He’s earned the right to say it. This season his teammates picked him as a team captain for the first time. He’s spent nine seasons with the team and only four players on the current roster have more seniority than him.
This will be his fifth Super Bowl appearance and he has two Super Bowl rings to his name.
“There’s a lot of players that never get to go to this game or even been to a playoff game. It’s definitely a blessing,” Chung told Oregon Live. “You’re gonna want to cherish these moments, because they might not come again.”
His comments about kicking the Rams’ butt predictably ruffled a few feathers.
“Hey Chung, we heard you talking that talk back there in Foxboro … let’s get straight,” Rams wide receiver Brandon Cooks said hours later as he dropped his mic.
Chung didn’t back down from his remarks.
Chung is one-fourth Chinese. His father Ronald Chung is half-Chinese and half-Jamaican. His mother, Sophia George, is Afro-Jamaican
