At least four Asian Americans are among the nominees for the 2019 Peabody Awards.
Hasan Minhaj’s Patriot Act on Netflix is among the 14 finalists in the entertainment category.
The comedic series in its first season is described as a nuanced look at the week’s news, politics and culture. This would be Minhaj’s second Peabody win. The former Daily Show correspondent won a Peabody last year for his Netflix special, Homecoming King.
Also nominated in the entertainment category is Killing Eve starring Sandra Oh. The program premiered its second season on Sunday and played to the highest ratings in its short history. BBC America promptly announced it had renewed Killing Eve for a third season. The show is also simulcasted on AMC.
This year Oh has been honored as outstanding actress by the Golden Globe, Screen Actor Guild and Critics Choice Awards.
Producers Bing Liu and Diane Quon are also up for a Peabody for their documentary Minding the Gap. The film follows three skateboarders and their transition from the teen years into adulthood. You can watch the doc on Hulu.
In all, the Peabody announced 60 finalists from more than 1200 entries. To become a finalist, you must earn the unanimous vote of 19 jurors. Under the rules, 30 of the finalists will become winners.
The Peabody Awards will be held May 18 with the winners announced beginning next week.
