New Yorker Article Rehashes Mike Pompeo’s Support for a Blog That Called Indian American Opponent a ‘Turban Topper’ in 2010

A few old skeletons from Secretary Mike Pompeo’s closet have reappeared in the media.

This week The New Yorker published an article on Mike Pompeo, detailing how the Secretary of State has risen through the ranks of the Republican Party. The article remembered the nasty 2010 Congressional campaign Pompeo ran against Indian American state legislator Raj Goyle in Kansas’ 4th district. Specifically, it recalls an incident in which Pompeo’s campaign tweeted support of a blog which called Goyle a “turban topper.”

According to Newsweek, Pompeo also purchased billboards that read “Vote American-Vote Pompeo,” implying that Goyle was less American than him. Ironically, Goyle was born and raised in Kansas while Pompeo grew up in California.

Many people called for the billboards to be taken down and asked him to denounce the blog’s “turban topper” comments.

Pompeo, Newsweek says, called Goyle during the campaign to personally apologize. Goyle accepted.
