‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Director Addresses Sequel’s Pay-Gap Controversy

Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu has addressed screenwriter Adele Lim’s decision to exit the sequel amid pay disparity issues, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Chu took to Twitter to address the controversy.

Last week, Lim announced that she had exited the Crazy Rich Asians sequel because of pay disparity between herself and co-writer Peter Chiarelli.

On Monday, Chu tweeted a picture of a written statement expressing his support of Lim.

“For those of you who are asking, you bet your ass I stand with Adele!” Chu said at the beginning of his tweeted statement.

Chu explained that when he learned of the pay-gap he jumped into action. Unfortunately, by the time he and others got involved too much time had passed.

Gemma Chan retweeted Chu’s statement, adding that she too supported Lim.

“Pay disparity disproportionately affects women and POC and there is still a long way to go – both in the conversation and how to rectify it,” Chan said in her tweet. “We can and must do better, faster.”

Lim herself has yet to respond to these recent statements of support. She did, however, thank Chu and the cast of Crazy Rich Asians in a tweet on Sunday.
