A producer from NPR has resigned after tweeting that “if Indians give up Hinduism, they will also be solving most of their problems,” reports the International Business Times.
The tweet from Furkan Khan has since been deleted and she has taken to Twitter to apologize.
NPR released a statement saying it “regrets the unacceptable tweet by New Delhi producer Furkan Khan. This comment does not reflect the views of NPR journalists and is a violation of our ethical standards. She has publicly apologized for her tweet and has resigned from NPR. “
Some on Twitter have compared Khan’s tweets to statements made by terrorists who had attacked Pulwama in Jammu & Kashmir in February this year and killed 40 police officers, according to Indica News.
A petition signed by more than 1500 people on Change.org is calling on NPR to display more journalistic integrity and accuses National Public Radio of consistent bias against Hindus and Hinduism.
