ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat will be officially coming to a close, with season six ending in a series finale slated for February of next year, reports Vulture.
“We couldn’t be prouder of this game-changing show and the impact it has had on our cultural landscape,” said ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke. “The success of Fresh Off the Boat has helped pave the way for inclusion throughout the industry. Nahnatchka Khan and her brilliant creative team have created an unforgettable series with an Asian-American family front and center, something that hadn’t been done in two decades. The cast, led by Randall Park and Constance Wu, is one of the finest and funniest on television. We’ll miss the Huang family and are eternally grateful for the incredibly heartfelt stories they have told these past six seasons.”
The show’s ratings haven’t been doing great, despite moving from its former Tuesday block to Friday nights.
The sixth season also kicked off with some controversy earlier this year; lead actress Constance Wu took to Twitter to express frustration after the announcement of the series being renewed, which left many confused.
The now deleted tweet read, “So upset right now that I’m literally crying. Ugh. Fuck.”
After a Twitter storm of backlash, which involved people calling her ungrateful, Wu explained that working on Fresh Off the Boat for another season meant having to give up another project she had been pursuing for a while.
Twitter responded to the announcement of the end of the series with jokes about Wu being ecstatic, although she herself currently has nothing on social media in response.
Some Twitter users came to Wu’s defense.
Hudson Yang, who plays Eddie Huang, the eldest of the sitcom family’s three sons, took to Twitter to encourage people to tune in to the remaining episodes.
“I’m so proud of the show and what we’ve accomplished over the past six seasons,” said series creator Nahnatchka Khan. “Thank you to everyone at ABC and 20th Century Fox Television for going on this ride with us. It was truly a special experience and hopefully will forever be a reminder of all the stories out there that deserve to be told. Like B.I.G. said, ‘And if you don’t know, now you know.’”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fresh Off the Boat was the first broadcast sitcom about an Asian American family in over 20 years, since 1994’s All-American Girl.
New episodes of Fresh Off the Boat currently air on Fridays at 8:30 pm EST on ABC. The sixth season’s 14th and 15th episodes will be combined for an hour-long series finale on February 21.
A Fresh Off the Boat spinoff, centered on an Indian American family whose daughter goes to school with Eddie Huang, is currently in development.
