An art professor from Mount Holyoke University in Massachusetts, west of Boston, is facing charges of armed assault with the attempt to murder a person over 60, reports Gazzettenet.com.

Rie Hachiyanagi, 48, also is accused of three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, mayhem, and armed assault in a dwelling.

Authorities say she beat the victim with a rock, fire poker, and garden shears and left her with serious injuries.

According to WWLP, the victim told police she let Hachiyanagi into her home and when she turned around, Hachiyanagi hit her over the head with “something hard.” The two have been friends and have known each other since 2005.

“People are capable of lots of scary things so I mean unfortunately, that does happen but it is kind of scary to hear that it can happen so close to home,” South Hadley resident Catherine Vaughan told WWLP.

Hachiyanagi has been placed on administrative leave and banned from campus pending an investigation.
