Still stinging from criticism of Hank Azaria’s portrayal of Apu on The Simpsons, the long-running program has announced White actors will no longer portray non-White characters.
The decision follows a similar decision by the producers of another Fox animated sitcom, Family Guy, according to Inside Hook.
Earlier this year, Hank Azaria would be stepping away from his role as Apu, acknowledging that he finally understood the controversy after 30 years of playing the character.
The decision by the show’s producers is the first acknowledgment of a permanent change.
According to Den of Geek, several of Apu’s family members portrayed on the program are also voiced by non-Whites. The show had previously said Apu would remain a part of The Simpson’s.
Earlier this week, the creator of BoJack Horseman acknowledged it was wrong to cast a White to portray a Vietnamese American.
