Former Vice President Joe Biden has endorsed the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate and current Speaker of the Maine State Assembly, Sara Gideon, according to Portland Press Herald.
“Ending the Trump nightmare is not enough,” Biden said in a Gideon campaign release. “We can’t just go back to the way things were. We need to make progress on health care, the climate crisis, criminal justice reform, our courts, and so much more. And to do that, I need Sara Gideon in the U.S. Senate.”
Gideon’s mother is Armenian American and her father is Indian American. Her campaign has garnered attention from the Democratic Party and raised $23 million, a Maine record, NDTV reported.
Gideon’s platforms include decreasing healthcare costs, responding to the opioid crisis, along with tax and education reforms
The New York Times reports Gideon is “one of the best-positioned candidates to unseat” Republican incumbent Susan Collins this fall. Gideon became the official Democratic nominee earlier this week.
“This campaign is about all of us, and about how we can build a stronger future together,” Gideon said in an acceptance speech broadcast on Facebook. “After 24 years in Washington, Senator Collins has become part of that broken system, putting special interests and her political party first, and Mainers know it and feel it.”
If Gideon is elected this fall, Democrats will dominate Congress in New England.
In addition to Biden, Maine Gov. Janet Mills endorsed Gideon on July 16, and 75 leaders across the state endorsed the candidate in 2019, just three months after she announced her campaign in June.
“Senator Collins has changed, and Mainers deserve better,” Gideon said. “Mainers deserve a senator who will bring people together to overcome the challenges we face.”
