Indian Americans in the Silicon Valley city of Sunnyvale are reacting to a brazen robbery of a mother pushing her baby in a stroller.
The robbery caught on video happened in broad daylight. NBC Bay Area reports the video shows a man running up behind two woman with a baby stroller. He then attacks after pretending to tie his shoe. He throws her on the ground and snatches her necklace.
ABC7 News reports the victims are South Asians and this is one in a series of jewelry robberies in their community.
Indian Americans told the station they feel they are being targeted for their gold jewelry. They suggested the jewelry not be worn in public.
The Sunnyvale Police agree.
“Please honor your cultures but when you’re walking around perhaps it’s good to cover up with a scarf or cover-up your bracelets,” Captain Dan Pistor of the Sunnyvale Department of Public safety said to ABC7.
The robbery happened in a neighborhood described as multicultural.
A similar robbery happened an hour earlier in nearby Mountain View. That robbery involved a knife. Police arrested the suspect, but the incident is not believed to be related to the one in Sunnyvale.
The woman in the baby stroller escaped with minor scrapes.
