A district judge in Minnesota rejected a divorce settlement between Derek Chauvin, the officer who had his knee on George Floyd’s neck, and Chauvin’s wife, Kellie Chauvin.
Fox9 reports Judge Juanita Freeman cited what she called a “badge of fraud” in announcing her decision.
The settlement in the uncontested divorce called for almost all of Derek’s assets to be transferred to Kellie Chauvin. The former Minneapolis Police Officer is facing a federal lawsuit in Floyd’s death. The couple is also facing tax fraud charges.
“The court has a duty to ensure that marriage dissolution agreements are fair and equitable,” the judge wrote in her decision, according to Bring Me the News. She went on to call the proposed transfer of funds “badges of fraud.”
The Star Tribune spoke with divorce attorneys who called Freeman’s decision rare. The attorneys said divorces of convenience sometimes happen to protect someone’s assets. The couple may be trying to protect their assets from potential civil judgements against Derek Chauvin.
