Deputies say a 79-year old man in the Central California town of Denair drove a tractor through a fence before being shot at 15 times by officers.
ABC 10 reports Seo Myong Yang is accused of driving the tractor through a fence and onto a public roadway after they received two calls for help for a mental health crisis.
At least one of those calls for help came from his wife.
Yang suffered wounds, but continued to sit in the tractor after being shot. Body cam video released show Yang screaming at officers and refusing to exit the vehicle after being shot.
“Yang drove at a citizen and deputies with reckless disregard,” said a Stanislaus County Sheriff’s spokesperson. “He continued to act defiantly while asking for our sheriff’s deputies to kill him.”
The Modesto Bee reports Yang is a licensed physician and surgeon whose license is set to expire in October 2021. He once worked at the Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, but the hospital says he no longer works there.
The Bee reports in 2019, deputies found him intoxicated at a billiard hall where witnesses accused him of throwing an empty beer bottle at his wife. The District Attorney later dismissed the case.
