Vogue’s cover story on Kamala Harris in its February edition will feature a cover photo of Harris in tennis shoes, reports The Hill.
The choice which surprised those in the Vice President-elect’s office has outraged some on social media.
The photo selected for the cover is on the left in the tweet from Vogue above. The photo on the right is the one Harris team thought would be selected.
Critics considered it inappropriate for Vogue to select a casual photo of Harris in sneakers to represent the upcoming first Asian American and Black Vice President of the United States.
“The team at Vogue loved the images Tyler Mitchell shot and felt the more informal image captured Vice President-elect Harris’s authentic, approachable nature—which we feel is one of the hallmarks of the Biden/Harris administration,” a statement from the magazine sent to E read. “To respond to the seriousness of this moment in history, and the role she has to play leading our country forward, we’re celebrating both images of her as covers digitally.”
Vogue says the magazine has already gone to print and that its too late to change the cover. However, it says the more formal photo will be used on its digital edition.
“Aides to Harris and Vogue had the understanding that the blue suit/gold background would be the cover photo. Without telling Harris’ team, Vogue changed it to the pink/green photo which the Vice President-elect’s team did not agree to,” a source said to CBS.
