Hundreds joined a 13-year-old fashion designer in San Mateo, South of San Francisco, to call for solidarity against anti-Asian hate Saturday.
NBC Bay Area reports Ashlyn So told her mom she wanted to organize a rally.
“I just thought this isn’t OK; I have to do something about this,” she said speaking about the more than 2,800 hate incidents reported to the Stop AAPI Hate hate crime reporting website in 2020.
The young fashion designer received the backing of the Anti-Racist Coalition in nearby Millbrae to organize the event.
“She said, mommy, this is not right, I want to do a march, I’ve never done this before, but hey let’s figure this out we can do this,” said Angelu Wu, her mom, to ABC7 News.
Grown ups made up the vast majority of the rally attendees, but clearly many came inspired by a 13 year old. San Mateo City Councilwoman Amourence Lee, Millbrae City Councilman Anders Fung and Belmont Mayor Charles Stone all joined the rally
“The reality is, this is going to take generations. But the good news is generations are within sight. And in the case of the seventh grader, it sounds like they are our children already,” Bing Chen, the founder of Gold House, a non-profit promoting Asian American entertainers, said to ABC7.
