An Asian American man repeatedly stomped in the head Friday night in New York remains in a coma this morning, reports CBS New York.
Surveillance video tweeted out by the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force shows a culprit repeatedly kicking 61-year-old Yao Pan Ma for some 13 seconds.
Police released an updated video of the suspect Sunday.
“This should not happen to my husband or anyone else,” said his wife Baozhen Chen to CBS NY. “This is America. I wish the criminal can be arrested and put in jail for good.”
Chen spent much of Sunday praying for her husband
The Sandhill Express reports dozens marched through the streets of Manhattan Sunday to express their outrage.
Yao’s neighbors expressed shock.
“They’re good people. I think they’re good people. It’s very sad. They just collect bottles. They don’ make any noise up here. I think it’s horrible,” Jermaine Mack said.
A vigil is scheduled tonight at 6 for Ma at Harlem Hospital.
A Go Fund Me account for Ma has so far raised $90,000 of its $100,000 goal. Ma reportedly was collecting cans to earn extra money when he was attacked. According to the Gothamist, he recently lost his job due to the pandemic.
The incident has drawn the attention of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
“I’m sickened to learn of yet another bigoted act of violence against an Asian American man,” Cuomo said in a statement. “This is not who we are as New Yorkers, and we will not let these cowardly acts of hate against members of our New York family intimidate us. We stand united with the Asian American community which has always been an important part of our diverse identity as a state.”
