The Senate Thursday confirmed Zahid Quraishi to be a US District Judge in New Jersey, CNN reports. Quraishi will soon become the nation’s first Muslim American federal judge.
Quraishi received bipartisan support by being confirmed 81 to 16.
“Judge Quraishi has devoted his career to serving our country, and his story embodies both the rich diversity of New Jersey and the promise of America as a place where anything is possible,” Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., said according to USA Today.
President Biden nominated Quraishi along with a diverse list of 10 other nominees including Judge Florence Pan who, if confirmed, would become the first Asian American judge on the district court in D.C.
“We must expand not only demographic diversity, but professional diversity, and I know that President Biden agrees with me on this, and this will be something that I will set out to do,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said, CNN reported.
Quraishi has served as a U.S. Magistrate judge out of New Jersey. He is the first Asian American federal judge in New Jersey.
