Followers of a subreddit about San Diego are accusing an alteration shop of racism after it thanked China in its announcement that it would be closed this summer.
Closed July til September 10. “THANKS CHINA,” Wonder Weavers wrote in all caps on its website.
In a follow up post, it announced it is closed due to “cunstruction.” It’s not clear what prompted the “thanks China” comment.
Several people on Reddit discussed the post under the heading “A racist shop owner has posted “Thanks China” next to the sign that he’s closed for business on his website.”
“Cunstruction” LMAO! What a moron,” said one.
“Wonder Weavers owner is a VERY Conservative person that was well known in the area…I have no doubt that he’s a true believer that this a Chinese government “thing” to depopulate the planet or something like that,” commented another.
“Of course they’ve been in business since the mid-40s. It’s probably run by the founder’s kid, which takes this into boomer territory. My boomer mom considers herself to be liberal, but she tried to defend calling this “the China virus” since when she grew up they had “the Hong Kong flu.” I really, really hope that my generation isn’t so adverse to accepting progress when we get older,” said a third person.
