An Asian American woman was sexually assaulted on the New York City subway Monday morning.
Twenty-three-year-old college student Stephanie Wang posted about her assault on Instagram.
She said she was riding the 1 train near 28th Street around 11:30 a.m. when she felt a man get closer to her. The man’s penis was out, and he touched her arm with it.
Wang says she screamed and asked him what he was doing. She followed him off the train and took his picture. He then grabbed her phone, damaged it and shoved her to the ground.
In an interview with ABC7 NY, Wang says she screamed after the man pushed her. No one came to her aid.
She told ABC7 NY’s CeFaan Kim that the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes prompted her to speak up for herself.
“So many Asian American stories out there. Just the hate crimes going on… I thought to myself, whether this was a hate crime or not, if I ever get into an altercation, I wanna stick up for myself,” she said.
