Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings set a Labor Day weekend Thursday night record with $8.8 million in domestic ticket sales, reported Forbes.
The latest Marvel flick officially opened on Friday, September 3, but those in the know know that big box office movies generally have a soft open Thursday night.
The strong open indicates that perhaps Shang-Chi will do better than the anticipated opening three day weekend of $45-50 million, reported Variety.
The opening surpassed that of F9 which grossed $70 million on its opening weekend, but fell short of Black Widow’s Thursday night opening of $13.2 million.
That Marvel movie has the strongest opening weekend numbers during the pandemic with $80 million.
Disney hopes Shang-Chi will get a boost from strong reviews with a 92 fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
