Mayor London Breed Wednesday appointed longtime San Francisco politicians David Chiu to be city attorney, reported CBS5.
Chiu will become the first Asian American to hold the position. He takes the place of Dennis Herrera who accepted the job as general manager of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission after 20 years as city attorney.
“My entire career, I’ve been focused on the fight for justice,” Chiu told the San Francisco Examiner. “What the city attorney’s office can do to address critical issues for The City and the country are the allure,” he said.
Chiu pledged to root out corruption in the city and to hold corporate power accountable.
He has been in the state assembly since 2014 and prior to that, had been a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and at one time, its president, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
“I am so humbled and grateful for this appointment,” CBS5 reported Chiu saying during his news conference. “As city attorney, I’m going to fight to make sure we are protecting workers, standing up for consumers, and we are going to hold corporations accountable if they cross the line.”
