Arrest in hate crime. Suspect accused of spitting on Asian woman

An Asian American student from the University of Wisconsin, Madison told police a man spit at her and then made some remarks about COVID.

Campus police say they arrested Morgan Kroll, 37, and charged him with disorderly conduct and a hate crime, reports Madison.com.

Police identified Kroll through surveillance cameras and with the help of the Madison Police Department.

Channel3000 reports Kroll told police he crossed the street and spit on the victim’s face, but denies making comments about the coronavirus.

According to CBS58, the victim believes she was targeted because of her race.

As part of his bail, Kroll is banned from campus, although he has no affiliation with the university.

About 20% of the campus student population is Asian, reported Madison.com. In March of last year, more than half of the 82 bias incident reports involved incidents of discrimination against Asian or international students.

Anti-Chinese graffiti also appeared on campus.
