HBO Max has renewed Mindy Kaling’s The Sex Lives of College Girls for a second season.
The ten-episode series debuted on November 18. The show follows the sex lives of four college girls during their freshman year.
Amrit Kaur, an Indian American actress, plays Bela. Bela is excited to explore her sexuality after leaving behind her conservative household.
Kaur told Brown Girl Magazine she found the role “exciting” and “liberating.”
“It’s almost bizarre to say it’s exciting to be sexual because we’ve made it bizarre,” Kaur said in an interview. “That a South Asian girl is having sex and talking about sex vocally, we’ve never seen that on screen. For so long, we’ve been telling this lie that South Asian women are submissive. We saw Kalinda Sharma in ‘The Good Wife’ and that was it for a long time. And now this girl in our generation is talking about sex.”
The show has been well received. It has a 96 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
HBO Max is excited to see where the show goes next.
“Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble have created and written a show that is full of heart, female friendships, and awkward naked parties,” Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max, said in a press release. “We are delighted that this comic, honest portrayal of the college condition has resonated for everyone, whether they had sex in college or not. We can’t wait to see where these uniquely complex yet relatable characters will go next.”
The final two episodes of the first season will premier on Thursday, December 9.
