In San Francisco, a banner reading “Asians Are Strong” was vandalized over the new year, KHRON 4 reports.
The banner was put up on New Year’s day at the overpass near the 101 freeway’s Vermont Street exit. Three days later, the word “Asian” had been ripped from the banner with only the words “Are Strong” left.
Hudson Liao, founder of the organization “Asians Are Strong” helped hang the banner. He said he was proud of the banner and upset that someone had vandalized it.
“I was upset. I was pretty mad when it happened. It’s not even offensive. It says ‘Asians Are Strong,'” Liao told Khron 4. “Someone saw it on the freeway, got upset enough to get off the freeway, go find this random overpass and intentionally only cut off the Asians part, it wasn’t like the whole banner. They specifically cut off Asians to send a very very clear message that this was a racially motivated vandalism.”
