Nathan Chen’s quest for redemption couldn’t have gotten off to a better start.
After failing to medal at the 2018 games, Chen set a personal best winning the men’s short program in the team event at the Beijing Olympics.
Chen’s 111.71, just short of an international record, shot Team USA into first place with five competitions to go.
Time reports Chen won the short program on the strength of his quadruple Lutz-triple toe combination jump.
That was followed by personal best scores from ice dancers Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue and pairs team Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier.
At the end of the night, Team USA leads the second-place Russian Olympic Team 28 – 26, with China in third place with 21 points.
“We certainly have a great team,” said Chen to NBC. “That’s the amazing thing about a team event. We can all rely on each other. I’m excited to see how these guys do in the next couple of days.”
The team competition resumes Saturday night or Sunday in Beijing.
