A male protester showed up to the Boston Commons voting rights press conference to jeer at Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. However, he yelled at another Asian American woman at the press conference, mistaking her for the mayor.
“You’re a political puppet…why don’t you look into it, Mayor Wu?” he yelled according to Business Insider.
“Look into that — you’ll find the truth, Mayor Wu,” he added, MassLive reported the man screamed.
However, Wu did not attend the press conference on Monday.
The woman was Beth Huang, the executive director of Massachusetts Voter Table.
Huang later joked about the incident on her twitter, saying “If only being a 5’4″ Asian woman imbued in me the powers of being mayor of Boston.”
Wu later responded to Huang, saying “We should make some good trouble with this.”
Wu, the first Asian American woman to be elected mayor in Boston, has faced both misogyny and racism from protesters, reported MassLive.
Especially after her policy on vaccine mandates for city workers, protesters have visited and demonstrated at Wu’s Roslindale home from early in the morning, according to WBUR.
Some signs go beyond the vaccine mandate, as one man was seen holding a sign that evoked the Chinese flag and included the words, “Woke in Wu-ville,” according to WBUR.
He claims that Wu is a Marxist.
“Marxists are always racist, and they’re always liars,” Rob Burke said to WBUR. “So, Michelle, take a hike. Do what you got to do; leave these guys alone. Leave the police alone — the fire and the teachers alone.”
