Parents are outraged after authorities raided a preschool in San Diego and interrogated their children about whether the daycare center had enforced the mask mandate.
Howard Wu, part-owner of the Aspen Leaf Day Care Center, told the Voice of San Diego, he believes he’s being targeted for speaking out.
“After it all happened I actually pulled every licensing report issued in California during the pandemic to get the data to show we were treated more harshly than any other center,” he told Fox News Digital.
He described parents at the center as being extremely upset at what happened.
“This gross abuse of power is shameful and unacceptable for many reasons,” wrote Stephanie and Richard Rosado in a complaint after their four year old was interviewed by authorities during the raid in January. “The people who ordered this to be done and those who participated should be held responsible.”
Connie Wu’s daughter is just two years old and was also interrogated by officials. Wu is not related to Aspen Leaf’s owner. She’s been unable to find out what exactly happened.
“She’s not developmentally able to tell me,” Wu told Voice of San Diego. “She doesn’t have the vocabulary to be able to talk about being interviewed by a stranger.”
California regulators says its staff is trained to conduct such interviews in an appropriate matter and determined they were necessary.
Aspen Leaf Owner Wu believes the state has overstepped its authority to enforce a mask mandate at its center. Wu acknowledges his center has a no-mask policy.
Authorities say they acted after receiving a complaint from a parent.
Aspen Leaf has been issued a citation and agreed to enforce a mask mandate to avoid being shut down. That mandate ends on March 11, when Aspen Leaf says its enforcement will also end.
