Filipino American Remy Martin wore the flag of the Philippines on his back as the starting guard celebrated the NCAA Men’s basketball championship this week with the Kansas Jayhawks.
The Spin Philippines reports the Arizona State transfer scored 14 points in the championship game against North Carolina.
“This is bigger than me,” Martin wrote in a social media post on Facebook.
Martin does not shy away from his Filipino ancestry and goes by the handle the Filipino Kid on Facebook. His father is African American and his mother is Filipino. He holds dual citizenship.
According to Phil Star, Martin won the most outstanding player award in the Midwest region in the lead up to the championship run.
He’s been battling with injury all season which has been hampered by struggles with his knee.
“This year has been, you know, a tough year individually for me, just injuries and just you know, hard to find the groove sometimes but it felt great, man,” Martin said.
KU Sports report that the point guard exchanged high fives with his coaches shortly after the clock ticked to zero in the championship game.
“These guys have been awesome,” Martin said of his coaches and teammates after the 72-69 win over North Carolina. “I’ve been injured, going through ups and downs and these guys stayed consistent. I’m just so happy that I could help this team win a national championship. I’m honored.”
