Asian American and Pacific Islander politicians, activists and celebrities are calling for gun control after a Texas school shooting killed 19 children and two adults.
Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) posted a statement on Twitter calling for the country to do better.
“My heart breaks for the families and community in Uvalde, Texas—and for all victims of gun violence,” she wrote. “We must do better. We must save lives.”
Actor and activists George Takei called for a ban on assault rifles while also pointing out the hypocrisy of politicians who were more concerned with abortion laws than gun control.
“Ban assault rifles, not books,” Takei wrote on Twitter. “Regulate firearms, not women’s bodies. Protect kids, not lobbyists.”
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, issued a statement on behalf of the caucus.
In the statement, Rep. Jayapal specifically called on the Senate to act.
“It does not have to be this way. Our children are dying because the U.S. Senate refuses to act, and because Republicans continue to push for more guns instead of taking guns off the streets,” Rep. Jayapal said. “This isn’t inevitable. We have an obligation as public servants to interrupt this relentless march of violence. Progressives will continue the fight to do so.”
