President Joe Biden announced that two Asian American women are among his next round of judicial nominees.
According to a White House press release, Biden has nominated Cindy K. Chung, of Pennsylvania, to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and Mia Roberts Perez, of Pennsylvania, to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
If confirmed, Chung would first Asian American judge to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Since 2001, she has served as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania since 2021. Chung received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1997 and her law degree from Columbia Law School in 2002.
After law school, Chung served as an Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s Office for about six years. From 2009 to 2014 she was a trial attorney in the Criminal Section of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
Perez would be the first Asian American and second Latina judge to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania if confirmed. She has served as a judge on the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas since her election in 2016. She received her bachelor’s degree from Tuft’s University in 2003 and her law degree from Temple University, Beasley School of Law in 2006.
Before serving as a judge Perez was in private practice at her own firm, Perez Law. She has also worked as an Assistant Defender at the Defender Association of Philadelphia from 2006 to 2010.
Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA), the Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), said in a statement she was “delighted” to hear about the nominations.
“Cindy Chung and Judge Mia Perez have extensive experience and have shown great dedication to our country’s rule of law. I am urging my Senate colleagues to swiftly confirm these two AAPI women and look forward to supporting their confirmation — and subsequent successes — as they take on these new roles,” Chu said in the statement.
