Members of the Asian American community continue to be victims of gun violence in Oakland’s Little Saigon following a shooting that put a grandmother in the hospital.
Members of the Asian American community in Oakland’s Little Saigon have been victims of a number of different shootings, all unconnected, in the area.
As reported previously on AsAmNews, ride-share driver Kon “Patrick” Fung was killed on July 17 in his vehicle because of an attempted carjacking. The police arrested two individuals in connection with the crime.
A month later, Dentist Lili Xu was also fatally shot in broad daylight during an attempted robbery in the Asian community. There are no arrests in her case, and CBS News reports that the police have not released any other information about the incident.
Just a few days before Xu’s death, stray bullets hit the home of a Vietnamese couple in the early morning of Aug. 17. A massage therapist was struck by the bullets three times as she slept.
The victim’s daughter, Roxana, spoke to ABC7 to express her anger, fear, and disappointment with the situation. She said this was not the first time her mother had faced violence.
“She’s been robbed many times, she’s been punched, they grabbed a necklace on her in the streets,” Roxana said. “She’s gone through all of that, but this is the scariest moment of her life, because she almost died.”
According to her statement, Roxana’s mother woke up from hearing gunshot wounds ringing very close to her home then stray bullets began to penetrate the walls. Her mother was left wounded and is currently dealing with the incident’s aftermath.
“She still has all the bullet fragments inside her,” Roxana said. “It’s embedded deep inside. We can’t do anything about it. She’s in so much pain. We just want her to get better.”
Roxana’s family’s safety is her number one priority. She hopes Oakland police will do their due diligence and continue increasing police presence in the city.
The whole situation is highly frustrating for all those involved. The mounting pile of medical bills they have yet to pay does not alleviate the worry Roxana’s family is currently facing.
Roxana has set up a GoFundMe page to help with her mother’s medical expenses, found here.
