Pope John Francis has named Father John Nhan Tran auxiliary bishop of Atlanta, reports UCA News.
The Vietnamese American Catholic priest fled the communist in his home country 50 years ago. He comes from Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in New Orleans.
“After several days of prayer and trusting that God will provide, I was able to embrace the appointment by Pope Francis. I am indeed humbled to serve as auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Atlanta,” he said, according to Catholic Philly.
Tran will be ordained January 23.
“He is greatly respected by the clergy, religious, and laity of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He is a leader among our priests. We congratulate him and assure him of our prayers as he assumes his new ministry. It is bittersweet as he will be greatly missed,” Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond of New Orleans said.
WDSU reports Tran came to the United States with his family at the age of 9. He attended Don Bosco College in New Jersey before going to St. Joseph Seminary College and Notre Dame Seminary where he graduated with a Master’s of Divinity in 1992.
