A pregnant mother and her unborn child both died in what police suspect is a random shooting in Seattle, reports Fox13.
They say Eina Kwon and her husband Sung-hyun Kwon had been sitting at a light in their Tesla when the suspect ran alongside their vehicle and began firing. Surveillance video showed smoke either coming from the gun or from the glass shattering on the car.
An ambulance rushed the 34-year-old woman to the hospital where she underwent emergency surgery and later died. Her unborn baby survived a short time but also died.
Her husband was also treated at the hospital, but has since been released.
KING5 reports witnesses were able to identify the suspect who police arrested shortly after the incident. The suspect raised his hands and declared “I did it, I did it,” court documents indicated.
Police told KIRO7 the suspect did not know his victims.
“She was just a really, really giving person. And to hear about this happening. You know, she was expecting,” said Michael Hoyle, a friend of Eina. “She had a kid on the way with her family and she leaves behind another little one and uh, who’s gonna help them? Who’s gonna make sure that he can sustain a restaurant now that he’s gone through this tragedy?”
The couple owned a Japanese restaurant where a memorial of flowers has grown.
“It was terrible. I was like, ‘Wow, look at that. They’re trying to revive her back and bring her back,’” said Carliss Todd who witnessed the shooting. “I’ve never seen something like that before. It was just stunning.”
FOX13 reports the suspect has been identified as Cordell Maurice Goosby. He told police he has had a history of mental health care and police described him as being in crisis when they arrested him.
A Go Fund Me campaign has been set up by friends to help fly relatives from Korea for the funeral and to cover expenses for the burial. More than $40,000 has been raised so far.
The post described Eina as a “34-year-old mother, with a beautiful smile and lovely demeanor.”
The couple had a two-year-old son who is now without his mother.
