A man suspected of killing at least 4 women on Long Island 10 years ago has been arrested by members of the Gilgo Beach Task Force, reports CBS News.
Rex Heuermann of Massapequa, Long Island is under arrest for the murder of 3 women. He faces three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello.
The women became known as the Gilgo 4. He is also a prime suspect in the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, CNN reports.
Court documents say that case is expected to be resolved soon. All the victims were found on Gilgo Beach and most of the victims had been tied to prostitution.
The remains of six additional people were found along the beach. All were women except for a lone unidentified Asian male.
Investigators used cell phone data to track down the suspect as well as DNA evidence.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Rex Heuermann is a demon that walks amongst us, a predator that ruined families,” said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison, according to NBC News. “If not for the members of this task force, he would still on the streets today.”
Heuermann defense attorney who just took the case called the evidence against his client “circumstantial.”
“In terms of speaking to my client, the only thing I can tell you that he did say, as he was in tears, was ‘I didn’t do this,’” said defense lawyer Michael Brown.
