Jessica Pegula has called out an article that appears to poke fun at her wealthy background. Since the start of this year’s Wimbledon Open, British tabloids have targeted Pegula for her wealthy background.
On Friday, a Twitter user named Camille posted a screenshot of an article about Pegula published in The Times of London. The headline read, “Six quarter-finals, six defeats: Jesica Pegula needs dynamic that family billions can’t buy.”
Pegula retweeted Camille’s tweet, saying “I’ll tell you what I won’t buy is this [trash] article…”
Pegula’s parents are Kim and Terry Pegula. Terry is a billionaire who made his wealth in the oil and gas industry. The couple owns the Buffalo Bulls, an NFL football team.
This isn’t the first time Pegula’s family wealth has been scrutinized. Nearly a week ago The Daily Express, a British tabloid, published an article about Pegula with the headline: “Wimbledon billionaire richer than Cristiano Ronaldo set for huge payout after SW19 heroics.”
Many of Pegula’s colleagues have tweeted their support for her. Victoria Azarenka said she “spilled my coffee laughing” at Pegula’s tweet and called her a “legend.”
