Japan took the time to show respect to their fans after losing their World Cup quarter-final game.
The Japanese players and coaching staff stayed on the field to bow to their fans in the stands after the game.
The team played Sweden on Friday and lost 2-1. Japan have looked precise and consistent throughout their entire world cup run but struggled to get going until late into the game.
Sweden’s physicality tested the technical play of Japan. Center-back Amanda Ilested scored off of a set piece in the 32nd minute that Japan failed to clear properly. It was Ilested’s fourth goal of the tournament – all coming from set pieces.
Japan gave up a penalty, which was scored by Swedish player Filippa Angeldal in the 51st minute. After going down 2-0, Japan ramped up their energy and improved their passing. The team’s possession and attacking play improved late into the game.
Japan earned a penalty in the 75 minute but it was hit off the crossbar by Riko Ueki. In the 87th minute, Honoka Hayashi gave Japan a lifeline with a late goal. The team continued to push in added time but unfortunately fell short.
