An elderly Asian woman was hit and killed by a van while crossing the street in New York City’s Chinatown on Friday. The alleged driver of the van has been arrested.
According to ABC 7 New York, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. Ngan Yung, 88, was in the crosswalk of Canal and Allen Streets when a van making a right turn hit her.
When first responders arrived, Yung was unconscious with head and body injuries. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The van that struck Yung was an Access-A-Ride vehicle, a service that transports people with disabilities, Gothamist reports. The Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York City technically owns the vehicles but they are operated by independent contractors.
The driver, 43, remained at the scene of the crash, CBS News reports. Police arrested the driver, saying he failed to yield and failed to exercise due care.
